The BBC has an interesting article on how to survive a plane crash. The odds are surprisingly high: “In the US alone between 1983 and 2000 there were 568 plane crashes. Out of the collective 53,487 people onboard, 51,207 survived.”
Tips include:
- Make an escape plan.
- Know where the nearest cabin crew are seated.
- Know how to undo your seatbelt.
- Count the seat rows from your seat to the nearest exit.
- In case of crash, adopt the correct brace position.
In the audio article Professor Ed Galea also suggests sitting as close to the exit as possible, with most survivors sitting within 7 seat rows of an exit. He also says you should take an aisle seat and sit together with your family or friends if you are travelling in a group.
